Fireplace & Internal Stonemason Repair

A chipped mantel corner, a cracked hearth or years of soot staining shouldn't mean replacing a fireplace surround. Our on-site stonemason repairs restore the surface invisibly, at a fraction of the cost of a new install.

Fireplace & Internal Stonemason Repair

Fireplace surrounds take more day-to-day knocks than almost any other feature in the home — fireguards, logs, coal and vacuum cleaners all take their toll on exposed corners and edges. A single chip or crack rarely means the whole surround needs replacing, yet fireplace fitters will often quote for a full strip-out and refit. At FinishWise we repair the damaged area in place and colour-match it to blend invisibly with the surrounding stone.

We work on marble, limestone, granite, slate and cast stone surrounds, mantels, hearths and internal stonework, tackling impact chips, hairline and structural cracks, corner breaks, soot and heat staining, and failed or open joints. Most repairs are completed in a single visit with minimal dust and no need to remove the fire itself.

Marble fireplaces are particularly prone to chipping along the front edge of the hearth and at the mantel corners, where the material is thinnest and most exposed. We rebuild the missing material using colour-matched compounds that are shaped and polished to match the surrounding veining and sheen, so the repair disappears under normal room lighting.

A fireplace surround repair typically costs a small fraction of a full replacement and refit. Replacing a marble or stone fireplace surround can run into several thousand pounds once removal, disposal and refitting are included — a professional repair restores the same look for a fraction of that outlay.

Repair vs. replace — why it makes sense

Before spending thousands on replacement, consider what a professional cosmetic repair actually delivers.

Older stone and cast surrounds often show hairline cracks from historic movement or heat cycling. We stabilise and fill these cracks so they no longer catch dust and grime, restoring a clean, tight-jointed appearance without disturbing the surrounding brickwork or hearth.

Soot and heat staining around the fire opening is one of the most common complaints we address — years of use can leave a stubborn grey or black halo on light stone that ordinary cleaning won't shift. We treat the surface to lift staining and, where the stone itself has been etched by heat, rebuild and re-polish the affected area to match.

Because this is internal stonework in a lived-in room, we work cleanly, protect surrounding flooring and furniture, and leave the room usable the same day in the majority of cases.

How it works

A straightforward process, from first contact to finished repair.

  1. 01

    Free assessment

Send us a photo of the damaged surround, mantel or hearth via WhatsApp or email. We assess the damage and provide a no-obligation quote, usually within 24 hours.

  2. 02

    Colour matching

We arrive with a full range of colour-matched compounds and select the precise match for your stone — including veining, tone and surface finish.

  3. 03

    Repair & rebuild

The damaged area is cleaned and prepared, with surrounding flooring and furniture protected. The repair is built up in layers to restore the correct profile, then shaped to blend into the surrounding stone.

  4. 04

    Polish and inspect

The repair is finished to match the surrounding sheen — polished, honed or textured as required — and inspected in different lighting before we leave.
